What the?
It's always nice to understand why these things happen. After a bit of searching around, I found the answer. Disable tapping mode on the touchpad. Tapping mode is being able to tap the touchpad to substitute a mouse-click.
I've had tapping disabled on my laptop for some time (it is something that has always irked me). Thinking about it, it is likely that on Jess's laptop, the touchpad is getting less sensitive with age, and when you hit the keys on the keyboard a little harder, it triggers a tap on the touchpad. Which would register as a mouse-click, and if your mouse cursor is over a different dialog ...
Now I understand =)

My previous post did cover some Australian electoral ground. I also wanted to include some info on Double dissolution elections. Click on the link to get a more verbose explanation. I've always wondered what the media is talking about in regard to them.
Briefly, when the Senate refuses to pass a bill twice in three months that the lower house (the House of Reps) has passed twice, with amendments, the Governor-General can call a "double dissolution" election where both houses are dissolved and are put up for election again. Basically the public is asked to re-elect the entire government. There's more to it, you can read about it in the link.
