E equals mc squared

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Travel. A lot.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Good question. Let me check. Here's my goals from last years list:
* Make it through our trip without too many emergencies - Done!
* Get a visa/permit for Jess in Australia that allows her to work - Done!
* Make it back the US in time for Christmas - Nope!
* Possibly try to move to Melbourne in there somewhere - Not a chance!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
How about get pregnant? Sheesh about three people at work and same number of cousins. One of my cousins also gave birth earlier this year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Mum's brother Albert, but we weren't all that close really.

5. What countries did you visit?
France, Germany, Poland, Belarus (it counts!!), Russia, Mongolia, China & Hong Kong. Technically UK too, but I'll leave it out.

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Our own place and some form of transport for Jess. Oh and obviously an awesome wedding in Buffalo. But it is definitely going to happen ;)

7. What dates from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
9th Feb - When I proposed to Jess in the castle in Krakow, Poland
12th Mar - Arriving home in Australia after two and a bit years away
4th Apr - Getting a "real" job (haha sucked in Ali & Lauren)
18th Jun - Saying our vows and exchanging rings
4th Oct - When Jess got her temp. Spouse visa

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Somehow managing to survive through seven months on my meager wage. Oh wait. There was that AWESOME train trip through Europe/Eastern Europe/Asia. Six months of planning was worth it ... it went off without a hiccup.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Oh, for sure the Oki dot matrix printer that I completely f***ed at work. Hardest phone call of my life. "Hi, I can't fix your printer. No charge, I'll drop it back." Talk about tail between the legs. Never touching one again if I can help it.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Had some interesting things going on during our second day in China. Some sinusitis when I was in Brisbane for training.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Easy, the visa for Jess. Well, I didn't buy it, we bought it. $2000 is peanuts compared to having a second income. Maybe the Wii, its a lot of fun. I still haven't paid for the laptop yet.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Last year I said Paul. This year me. Go me, because I organised a huge train trip. All you tall poppy cutters can go and get stuffed. It wasn't easy but my effort in organising it beforehand paid off. Unfortunately only my parents, Jess's parents and us three will ever really know how much effort I put into it. Videos still to come. Promise.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
You know, it is difficult to name people here without feeling concerned about the effect it will have on those people if they read this. So I'll go political. Tony Abbott and George Bush/Dick Cheney.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Travel (we arrived in Oz with our backpacks), and the rest I'm not sure. Somehow between Jess and I we managed to get all our credit card payments through on time, Jess's loan payments through on time, plus save up for a $2000 visa (did I mention it cost $2000?) amongst other things. Good question: where the hell did most of our money go?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
It may have been all of twelve months ago but this time last year I was getting extraordinarily excited about stepping onto that first train in Edinburgh. That and changing into my kilt in Changi International in Singapore and swigging whisky with Paul as we prepared to enter back into Australia.

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
Probably that Urthboy song. Or the one by SoKo.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? more content.
thinner or fatter? about the same. bit more muscle
richer or poorer? As ever, the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
More stopovers in Germany, Poland and Russia, and more kung fu.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Arguing with Paul and arguing with my Mum.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Went to church with my Grandma, breakfast with my Dad and his partner, crashed Christmas lunch at my aunts place. Watched movies with Jess for the rest.

21. How did you spend New Years Eve?
Watched movies and played Wii with Jess, Paul, Luke & Tammy

22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
Well, no I was already in love and hatching a plot to surprise Jess with a question

23. How many one-night stands?
Does it count if its with the same person? All year? Forever?

24. What was your favourite TV program?
Come on, Heroes. That and BBC Planet Earth.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
You know, not that I can think of. I just don't feel that strongly about anyone right now.

26. What was the best book you read?
The Confusion by Neal Stephenson (2nd in the Baroque Cycle)

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Probably Booka Shade. I'll go through Ario's list with a BT client later.

28. What did you want and get?
Start doing kung fu.

29. What did you want and not get?
A half decent wedding ceremony and reception in Australia.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Thank you for smoking, tied with Die Hard 4.0.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Dried out from heavy drinking night before, and prepared to get married the next day.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
My father being a little more diplomatic about kicking us out.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Late twenties, couldn't-give-a-stuff, still-wearing-favourite-pair-of-jeans?

34. What kept you sane?
Who else, Jess. I have to be sane for Jess otherwise we would have ended up in a screaming match with Dad.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Myf Warhurst. The regular spots on Spicks & Specks falling out of her top did it.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Really, there wasn't that much. Maybe WorkChoices?

37. Who did you miss?
Paris (not the city, it was shit)

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Luke, Tammy, all of Jayson's family, and all the people from my work.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
Never take a sit-down, flushing toilet for granted, and never take toilet paper for granted.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"Jesus I was evil" by Butterfingers. I don't know. There's really not one song that could sum up the year I've had, unless we start delving into some super ballads. And nobody wants to go there.

When I stopped at the traffic lights on the way home tonight, a possum was waiting to cross the road. It waited until the lights were green and crossed safely in the pedestrian crossing area. They know the deal.

New Years was a blast, lots of guitar hero and wario ware on the Wii, with generous helpings of good documentaries (The Sounds of Aus, with John Clarke, and Jerry Seinfeld's Comedian).

Nothing else new to report. Haircut tomorrow. Ciao.
